Over the years many studies have been done on the conscious mind. As humans 95% of our cognitive activities are generated through the subconscious mind and only 5% through the conscious mind.
I don’t know about you, but to me this statistic is crazy! Think about it – we only utilize 5% of our brain to make conscious decisions. To live consciously.
Why is this?
From the time we are born we’re raised to know what those around us know. We’re raised to act how those around us act. We do not form our own conscious thoughts from a young age.
Our mind is formed to know and believe what we’ve absorbed from our surroundings. We’re taught to coast through life in a way that is not our own. We live like everyone else does – make the decisions that we’ve been taught to make, whether they’re good for us or not.
Activate Your Conscious Mind
As mentioned 5% of our mind is conscious. Let’s make it a goal to make it 9% – 10% – 15% or more.
Think about relationships you’ve been in or your current relationship. When you first met you fell head over heels for them. Everything was great. No arguments – the relationship wasn’t boring – each day you showed up and gave it everything you had in pure bliss. The honeymoon period.
During this time you’re using your conscious mind. You decide to show up for the other person everyday. If you disagree with them, you consciously decide to talk things out calmly or just let it slide because it is not worth arguing about. You’re happily in love.
Eventually this seems to just disappear. The magic goes away and the love is lost. You “fall out of love.” Why is this?
You stopped using your conscious mind and let your subconscious take over. Thus slipping right back into the old routine and thinking everything would just remain the same. You stopped showing up.
This applies to everything in life. The second you stop showing up is the second life takes over. Jim Carrey once said – “Life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you.” He couldn’t be more right in this statement.
Life is happening for you. It is happening to guide you along your journey. Make conscious life decisions every single day. From what to eat for breakfast to accepting a job offer.
Every decision you make has an effect on your life. Let life guide you down the the path that is right for you. When things get hard, know that it is a learning lesson and nothing more. Open your heart to life and make conscious decisions.
Decide to show up everyday and see how your relationships will change, but more importantly see how it will change your life.
